Sensation in winemaking: 4 autochthonous varieties that will replace the «strangers» in Galicia
Galicia returns to the roots: new rules for vineyards
The Department of Agriculture of the Administration of Galicia adopted revolutionary decision — Exclude from the list of key varieties of grapes “Palomino”, “Garvan Tintorer” and “Tempranilla”. Instead of them, autochthonous varieties will be used on the vineyards of the province: the red “Meresao” and “Espdadeliro”, white “Branco Lexitimo and Albillo to Avia”. This measure is aimed at strengthening the identity of the region and improving the quality of local wine.
The varieties, which will now be excluded, were introduced into circulation after the Philllocks epidemic, when winemakers sought to increase productivity. However, from the end of the 20th century, local manufacturers began to return to traditional varieties, and now it is forbidden to use “alien” types of grapes in new plantings. Owners of existing vineyards are invited to replace secondary varieties with priority.
According to the wine critic Jensis RobinsonGalicia is experiencing a real Winery boom Thanks to the growing interest in white wines. The largest manufacturers of red wines in Spain, previously concentrated in the south, are now actively investing in local farms. For example, Tempos Vega Sicilia invested about 20 million euros in projects in the municipality Rias Bayshas, and Alma Carraovejas acquired Viña Mein in Ribeiro.
Regional authorities are focused on autochthonous varieties, such as Albarino, from which they produce fresh, mineral and aged wines. The winemakers Rafael Palasios and Telmo Rodriguez have proved the huge potential of the Galician terroarers, creating white wines comparable in structure with samples from Burgundy.
Thus, a change in the Galician wine strategy illustrates the shift of consumer interest in the direction of more complex and characteristic white wines. Galicia returns to her rootsand this cannot but delight lovers of high -quality wine!
“The changes are a serious obligation to quality and the unanimous desire of all sides for winemaking based on local varieties,” says Luis Vasquez, the managing secretary of DO Ribeiro.
